A LAOIS GAA player was dropped from his team at the weekend after posting controversial comments on social media about the rugby rape trial.

Gary Walsh tweeted comments shortly after the verdict was delivered, in which all four defendants were unanimously cleared.

The full-forward later deleted the tweet and issued an apology. The Laois Twitter account sent a message distancing themselves from the remark, as did the team's sponsors MW Hire.

RTÉ Sport reported that the Laois county board suspended Walsh over the incident but it is unclear how long the suspension will last.

On Saturday's league final against Carlow in Croke Park in Dublin, Walsh was dropped from his side who went on to win. He had entered the game as top scorer in the division.

Walsh's Twitter profile picture had been a photo of him playing for the team. He has since replaced it with a version where the team sponsor is blurred.

Laois manager John Sugrue said his exclusion from the team resulted from a 'breach' of acceptable behaviour.

Asked about Walsh, Sugrue said: "As far as I'm concerned that is the end of it. We have to move on."

He added: "We spoke to the team about how we wanted to behave ourselves during the week. It was a breach of that and basically it's the consequences. It's unfortunate, we'll move on.

"These things are unfortunate and unnecessary for the team and the individual himself. For that I'd like to say we apologise for any offence caused.

"It wasn't obviously intentional on behalf of the Laois footballers so we'll move on from that now."
