THE food area of the bar at a well-known border hotel was closed for three days last month by inspectors after "mouse activity" was observed.

The Carrickdale Hotel, just over a mile from the border in Carrickarnon, Co Louth, was served with the closure notice by environmental health officers from the Republic's Health Service Executive.

The notice, issued on February 21 by inspectors, did not relate to the whole hotel but solely to the food area of the hotel bar.

The closure order was lifted three days later, on February 24. The Carrickdale declined to comment.

According to a list of orders released by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI), a total of eight businesses in the Republic were hit with enforcement notices in February.

In the north, food hygiene ratings must be displayed on the premises, but there is no such system in the Republic.
