RESIDENTS living in one of the most affluent parts of the city yesterday received letters about a planning application for a new £100 million 'health hub' on their doorsteps.

Belfast City Council informed those living near the Kings Hall in the south of the city it had received a proposal for a development on the 16-acre site.

Dubbed as a 'health and wellbeing centre', the venture is understood to include a number of privately run facilities and has a former NHS chief as one of its main advisers.

John Compton, the former chief executive of the Health and Social Care Board, is also one of the non-Executive directors of Benmore Octopus - the developers behind the project.

A GP centre for NHS patients is also part of the plans, along with the potential for onsite diagnostics including X-ray, ultrasound and near patient care for over 25,000 patients.

In addition, there are plans for a care home, hotel and leisure areas - with Abbeyfield confirmed it will run a residential care home facility at the site.

More than 30 apartments, made up of one and two bedrooms, designed "specifically for the elderly, to ensure the comfort and wellbeing of every resident can be met to exacting standards" are also included.

A multi-storey car park to cope with large volumes of traffic will be built close to one of the former show-rings associated wiht the Balmoral Agricultural show.
