BELFAST city hall last night lit up green, purple and white to mark the centenary of women's suffrage.

February 6 1918 saw the passing of the Representation of the People Act, the first to include almost all men in the political system and beginning of the inclusion of women.

It extended the franchise by 5.6 million men and 8.4 million women.

All men over 21 and women over 30 who met property or educational criteria.

The city hall's LED lighting system reduces the council's energy costs and allows it to light up the building in a variety of colours and combinations.
