A paramiltary-style shooting in west Belfast has been branded "brutal and horrific".

The 39 year-old man was shot in both ankles shortly after 9.30pm on Tuesday in the Glenalina Gardens area of Ballymurphy.

He was taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries following the attack.

Police have appealed for information.

SDLP councillor Tim Attwood condemned the shooting.

"Those attempting to coerce and control this community through violence and fear must be opposed," he said.

"There is no support for those who break into homes in the cover of darkness and shoot people. This is not a lawless community and we will not stand for this reckless criminality.

"The only way to take these people off our streets is for people with information to come forward to the police. We need to get their boot off the neck of this community".

Assembly member Gerry Carroll said he was "horrified" by the attack.

"These barbaric and inhumane acts bring nothing but pain and misery to an already beleaguered working class. They must come to an end," said the People Before Profit MLA.

It is the third paramiltary-style shooting to take place in the city in recent days.

On Sunday night, a 41-year-old man was shot five times in his arms and legs at his home in Divismore Park in Ballymurphy at around 7.35pm.

A short time later, in a separate attack, a 26-year-old man was shot at his home in Upper Meadow Street in the New Lodge area of north Belfast.

Police said a group of men entered his home at about 8.30pm and shot him three times in his legs.

Both victims are receiving treatment at the Royal Victoria Hospital for what police called "potentially life-changing" injuries.
