Women facing charges after Derry drugs find refused bail

TWO women have appeared at Derry Magistrate's Court charged in connection with a drugs find with an estimated street value of more than £200,000.

Sonya McDaid (45) of Dungiven Road in Derry and Piper McClenaghan (36) of Roe Mill Gardens in Limavady faced charges relating to the finding of cocaine valued at £75,000, amphetamines valued at £120,000, heroin valued at £2,000 and another find of cocaine valued at £15,000 and cannabis with a value of £3,500.

The women were also charged with possessing the drugs with intent to supply and being concerned in the supply of cocaine.

A police officer told the court that the PSNI stopped a car being driven by McDaid with McClenaghan as the front seat passenger on Tuesday at the Caw roundabout in Derry.

A search revealed five blocks of cocaine in a shoe box in a bag in the front passenger footwell.

He told the court a search was then carried out at an address in Roe Mill Gardens and police found more drugs.

The court was told that McDaid, who did not apply for bail, made full admissions but McClenaghan denied all knowledge.

He said that McDaid gave an account of how she came to be in possession of the drugs which police did not believe.

The officer opposed bail on the grounds that he believed both women were part of a wider network supplying drugs to the Derry area.

A solicitor for McClenaghan told the court she had been interviewed eight times and gave a consistent account.

He said that McClenaghan claimed to have been shocked that her partner would have been involved in drugs.

Deputy District Judge Terence Dunlop however refused bail and remanded both women in custody to appear again on February 1.
