A 24-YEAR-OLD man found with a gun on a Dublin to Belfast train will be sentenced next month at the Special Criminal Court.

Ciaran Ryan, from Summerhill, Dublin, pleaded guilty last month to the unlawful possession of a semi-automatic pistol.

Yesterday, he also admitted the possession of two rounds of ammunition.

Gardaí found the gun and ammunition at Dublin's Connolly Station on July 19.

The court heard yesterday that the gun was to be taken to the north, where it would be handed on to another person.

Gardaí had been staking out Connolly Station on July 19 when Ryan arrived and bought a ticket for the 3.30pm Belfast train.

He then met a woman pushing a buggy who handed him a white bag.

Gardaí later boarded the train and arrested Ryan, who tried to kick the white bag away.

A shoebox in the bag contained a loaded pistol and ammunition.

Ryan, who is serving a two year sentence for a drugs crime, has 35 previous convictions.

He will be sentenced on January 29.
