A 41-YEAR-OLD man extradited from the Republic in connection with the murder of prison officer David Black has been remanded in custody.

Damien Joseph McLaughlin (41) of Kilmascally Road, Dungannon, Co Tyrone, skipped bail late last year and fled to the Republic.

Following his extradition, he was arrested in Armagh yesterday and appeared before the city's magistrate's court.

He was remanded in custody until January 12.

Mr Black was shot dead by dissident republicans as he drove along the M1 on his way to work at Maghaberry prison in November 2012.

McLaughlin was awaiting trial for aiding and abetting the murder of Mr Black, two charges of possessing articles for use in terrorism, two counts of preparation for acts of terrorism and belonging to a proscribed organisation when he skipped bail.

He had been living at an address in west Belfast but when police called in December last year he could not be found.

The PSNI failure to carry out regular bail checks on McLaughlin is currently the subject of a Police Ombudsman investigation.

McLaughlin was arrested by gardaí in Co Donegal in March on foot of a European Extradition Warrant.

Dublin's High Court ruled earlier this month that McLaughlin could be extradited.
