A 22-year-old man suffered serious wounds to his back and side following a stabbing in Downpatrick.

Officers arrested a 21-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder following the incident in the Co Down town between 3.30am and 4am on Sunday.

The stabbing took place in the Ardilea Park area of the town.

The PSNI said officers were called to a property in the Killough Road area where they found the victim.

The man was rushed to hospital where his injuries were described as not life-threatening. The PSNI said the knife used in the attack may have been discarded and they urged the public to be vigilant and report anything suspicious.

SDLP MLA Colin McGrath has said that any one with information regarding the stabbing should contact the PSNI.

"We must remove the culture of knife and stabbing incidents," he said.

"This type of violent incident is not acceptable and I would urge anyone with information to contact the PSNI immediately.

"I hope that the victim makes a full recovery but I'm concerned at such an incident. This has been a lucky escape for him and this morning we could have been waking to a different and much more sinister headline.

"The PSNI are looking for the knife in the vicinity of the incident and I would ask the public to be vigilant for the object and contact police immediately if found."
