Women's Aid came together at Belfast city hall yesterday with a petition calling for the elimination of violence against women and children.

The charity, which works to end domestic violence, asked members of the public to sign the petition as part of a 16-day campaign .

The groups will also promote services available for women and children affected by domestic violence.

During the campaign, Belfast and Lisburn Women’s Aid have also been taking to social media with `16 myths for 16 days' to help dispel the myths and common misconceptions around domestic violence.

The charity reported that the PSNI respond to a domestic violence incident every 18 minutes and revealed that there were 29,166 domestic abuse incidents reported last year - the highest level recorded since the data recording began in 2004/2005.

Kelly Andrews Chief Executive of Belfast and Lisburn Women’s Aid said the 16-day activism campaign was taking place "against the backdrop of an unprecedented global outcry.

"Millions have rallied behind the hashtag #MeToo and other campaigns, exposing the sheer magnitude of sexual harassment and other forms of violence that women everywhere suffer, every day".
