A FORMER international cricketer appeared in court yesterday charged with drink-driving in Belfast.

South African-born Rodney Ontong also faces counts of driving while disqualified and having no insurance.

The 62-year-old was allegedly behind the wheel of a Skoda Yeti spotted on Kilburn Street on July 26 this year.

Ontong, of Thorndale Avenue in the city, entered the dock at Belfast Magistrates' Court to have the charges put to him.

Defence solicitor Hamill Clawson raised objections to the allegation that his client was driving with excess alcohol during the incident.

Mr Clawson claimed two prosecution witnesses in the case have provided inconsistent evidence.

District Judge Nigel Broderick agreed to adjourn proceedings for a response.

Ontong was released on continuing bail to return to court in a fortnight's time.

The former all-rounder captained Glamorgan during a first-class cricketing career spanning two decades.

He moved to Northern Ireland after his sporting career was ended by a road accident in 1988.
