A WEATHER forecast system which provides information and updates about conditions in mountainous areas is to add the Mourne Mountains to its service.

The Met Office Mountain Weather Forecast Service provides valuable and sometimes life-saving information for people who spend time in the mountains around the UK while also providing detailed forecasts for specific locations across hills and mountain tops.

As part of routine improvements and updates, the service has now added the Mourne Mountains in Co Down to the nine existing areas it already reports on, across Scotland, England and Wales.

Richard Orrell, Manager of Public Weather Services, said: "We’re pleased to be able to offer our Mountain Forecast to people visiting the Mourne Mountains in Northern Ireland.

"Mountain users in the area will be able to check and use these forecasts to help them plan their trip and be prepared for when the weather changes.

"These forecasts are compiled by specially-trained meteorologists who often spend time in the hills and mountains and know the ins and outs of mountain weather. No one knows Britain’s weather like the Met Office - so our forecasts are the ones to trust when it really matters".
