A pedestrian has died after being struck by a lorry during rush hour in Belfast city centre.

Lorraine Burrows (48) was hit by a Dale Farm truck on Wellwood Street, close to Great Victoria Street, at around 8am yesterday.

An air ambulance was quickly scrambled to the scene, landing in a nearby car park, but was not needed, with Mrs Burrows taken to the nearby Royal Victoria Hospital by the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service.

Ms Burrows, who is believed to be from east Belfast, was a recruitment consultant for Keenan Healthcare, based in the city centre.

She is thought to have on her way to work.

The company closed yesterday, sending out messages on social media: "Due to very sad unforeseen circumstances, Keenan Healthcare is closed on Tuesday 21st November. Thank you for your understanding. Khc."

Colleagues described Mrs Burrows as "such a lovely woman".

Police are seeking dashcam footage from vehicles in the area at the time to try to piece together what happened at the time of the collision.

Dale Farm yesterday confirmed that one of its lorries had been involved in the tragedy and said it is "investigating the incident in full cooperation with PSNI".

"Our immediate concerns are with the pedestrian involved in the accident and we will continue to offer our support in every way possible to all affected," a spokeswoman said.

Inspector David Gibson asked for anyone who may have seen what happened or have dashcam footage to contact officers on 101, quoting reference 198 21/11/17".
