A Co Down man has been charged with causing the death of a cyclist by careless driving.

At Newtownards Magistrates Court, 54-year-old Ian William John Lappin was charged with causing the death of Stephen Lynch (50) by driving carelessly on the Bangor Road in the town on 6 October last year.

The father of five, who was from the Downpatrick area, died as a result of the injuries he sustained when his bicycle was in collision with a Renault car close to the Somme Heritage Centre shortly before 5.50am on Thursday October 6.

Lappin, from the Circular Road, also in Ards, was not in attendance to hear his defence solicitor Chris Logic ask for the case to be adjourned for three weeks “for instructions.”

Adjourning the case to December 1, District Judge Mark Hamill told the lawyer to “consult with this man and take his instructions as soon as possible given the sensitive nature of the charge.”
