Police urged to act following second attack in Derry

POLICE in Derry have been urged to step up security following a second paramilitary-style attack in the area in just over a week.

The occupier of a house at Altcar Park in the city’s Galliagh area escaped injury when a masked and armed gang forced their way into the property on Tuesday night.

A PSNI spokesman said police were called to the area following reports of a disturbance.

The spokesman said: “At approximately 10pm, police received reports that a number of persons wearing balaclavas, one of whom was reported to be in possession of a firearm, forced entry into the property and caused damage to the inside of it before making off.”

The incident follows a shooting at Racecourse Park in the Shantallow area last week. Two women who were in the house were left shaken when two shots were fired into the building on October 30.

SDLP councillor Brian Tierney said those responsible for the latest incident were “callous criminals” who should be brought to justice.

“There’s no place for thugs in balaclavas to be prowling the streets of this city, causing mayhem and fear for local residents," he said.

The councillor said Tuesday’s attack was a reckless act in a large residential estate.

“Following the shooting last week, it’s critical that the PSNI gets a hold of this situation quickly. Hooded thugs carrying guns is a sight that no-one in this city wants to go back to,” he said.
