The slashing of tyres on 12 cars in east Belfast has been described as a "random, reckless acts of vandalism".

Police were last night working to establish a motive behind the attacks which saw vehicles targeted in the Perry Court, Madrid Street, Clandeboye Drive and Clandeboye Gardens areas of the Short Strand overnight on Thursday.

Sergeant Anne McCourt said: "At this time there is no suggestion that the incidents are hate crimes and we are working to establish a motive" and she appealed for anyone "who noticed anyone interfering with vehicles" in the Short Strand area to contact police.

Sinn Féin councillor Mairead O’Donnell said the attacks had left local residents "angry and shocked".

"People have woken up this morning with their tyres slashed in what can only be described as random, reckless acts of vandalism with no motive behind the damage," she said.

"This has left local people out of pocket and inconvenienced by these attacks on their cars.

"I would urge anyone who saw anything suspicious last night to contact the PSNI".
