THE wife of a murdered IRA man, whose role in the 1983 Maze prison escape is featured in a movie about the jail break, has died following an illness.

Campaign group Relatives for Justice paid tribute to north Belfast mother-of-six Kate Marley who died peacefully at home on Wednesday at age 72.

A spokesperson for the victims group said "We would like to extend our heartfelt sympathy to the family of Kate Marley. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this sad time."

Mrs Marley's husband was 41 when he was murdered by the UVF at the family's Ardoyne home in April 1987, less than two years after he was released from prison.

Their youngest son was two weeks-old at the time.

His funeral was delayed by three days after the RUC refused to let the cortège leave the north Belfast republican district.

The RUC handling of the funeral resulted in widespread riots across Belfast.

The Ardoyne IRA man was the mastermind behind the 1983 IRA escape from the Maze prison, that featured in the recent film, Maze, where Marley was played by actor Tom Vaughan-Lawlor.

Mrs Marley was also featured in the film visiting her husband in prison. Her character was played by Cork-born actress Eileen Walsh.

She will be buried at Milltown Cemetery tomorrow following 1pm Requiem Mass at Holy Cross Church in Ardoyne.
