THE Orange Order is still refusing to say whether it will expel a member jailed last month for driving into a crowd of protesters in at a parade in north Belfast.

John Aughey (63) was found guilty of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily injury, assault causing actual bodily harm and assault.

Six people, some of them police officers, were injured in the incident at Ardoyne shopfronts on July13 2015 as Aughey tried to make a u-turn.

A 16-year-old girl suffered a shattered pelvis and a broken ankle and collarbone after she was struck and became trapped under the car.

Aughey, from Brae Hill Park in Belfast, was given a two-year sentence at Belfast Crown Court with half to be spent in prison.

When asked whether the Orange Order would move to expel Aughey, a spokesman said it "had no comment".

Almost three weeks later, a spokesman for the institution yesterday again declined to comment on whether any action would be taken.

Last month, SDLP North Belfast MLA Nichola Mallon said the Orange Order needed to act.

"Failure by the Orange Order to take any action in response to this conviction will give the impression that it views these actions as acceptable behaviour for its members," she said.
