A STUDENT has released images of horrific facial injuries she sustained in an unprovoked assault in a bid capture her attacker.

Shanan Reid-McDaid (18), from Ilistrin just outside Letterkenny, Co Donegal, suffered a broken nose and head and facial injuries during the assault in the early hours of Sunday.

The teenager, who is a student at University College, Galway, said she thought she was going to die during the attack.

Shanan said she had been out for the night with her boyfriend and two other friends when she was set upon. The friends were walking towards taxis at Market Square in Letterkenny and did not hear what was happening to Shanan as she was a short distance away.

The teenager said she was subjected to a tirade of verbal abuse and when she turned around a man punched her in the face, knocking her to the ground where the assault continued.

In a post on her Facebook page, Shanan described what happened during the unprovoked attack.

She said her attacker was around 5ft 9in tall, blond haired and aged between 30 and 40, She described how he was wearing a dark coloured blazer, blue jeans and a light-coloured shirt and had a Donegal or northern accent.

The victim urged anyone who saw the man in the vicinity of St Eugene’s Cathedral to come forward. In particular, she appealed to taxi drivers who may have carried a man fitting that description in their vehicle.

Gardaí have said an investigation is under way.
