A NORTH Belfast football fan who had followed his team for almost 70 years has collapsed and died at an away match in Scotland.

Crusaders stalwart Billy Whiteside, father of club treasurer, Tommy Whiteside, fell ill during the first half of the third round of the Challenge Cup against Cover Rangers in Forfar.

The game was temporarily halted and players left the field as efforts were made by medics in the stadium and later by ambulance crew to revive him.

However, Crusaders said in a statement that "despite (their) best efforts... he could not be resuscitated".

Crusaders Chairman Stephen Bell said it was "a sad day" for the club.

"Billy was a lifelong supporter from a strong Crusaders family," Mr Bell said.

"He was telling us just today that he first came to Seaview with his father in the 1949-50 season, Crusaders' first season in the senior Irish League. Billy has been a good humoured jocular presence.. ever since. He has also travelled with the club across Europe."

Crusaders and Antrim GAA goalkeeper Sean O'Neill paid tribute to Mr Whiteside on social media site Twitter,

"Such sad news about Billy Whiteside today. A gentleman who was Crusaders to the core. RIP Billy."

Crusaders defender Howard Beverland also wrote about his shock.

"Terrible news of the passing of Billy Whiteside at today's game, thoughts and prayers with Tommy and the family at this time and the days ahead."
