School heartbroken by sudden death of 10-year-old pupil

A YOUNG pupil who died after collapsing at school has been remembered as a kind, caring and gentle child.

Isobel Anderson (10), a P7 pupil, fell ill at Dromore Central Primary School on Tuesday. She died late on Wednesday night.

The Education Authority (EA) is providing support to the staff and 700 pupils.

Principal Linda Allen said the whole school community was experiencing profound sadness at the sudden death.

Ms Allen said Isobel collapsed in school on Tuesday and, following initial on-site efforts by staff and paramedics to resuscitate her, was transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast where she died.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Isobel's mum and dad, her three sisters who are also pupils at Dromore Central, and the extended family circle," Ms Allen said.

"Isobel's wide circle of friends and classmates are heartbroken by her untimely loss and are being supported at this time by staff and relevant professionals.

"Isobel was a quiet but very popular pupil who always had a smile on her face and was recently described by her class teacher as a breath of fresh air. She was a kind, caring and gentle child, who will be very much missed in school by fellow pupils and staff alike. She will be remembered with great love."

The PTA of St Mary's Primary School in Banbridge offered it "heartfelt thoughts and prayers to the whole community of Dromore Central Primary School".

"In particular to the parents, sisters, family and friends of young Isobel Anderson following the news of her untimely passing. This is a tragedy beyond words and comprehension - we will pray for your strength and unity at this time," the group said.

St Aloysius' Primary School in Lisburn also expressed condolences to the children and staff.

"We will be particularly praying for the family and friends of Isobel Anderson following the news of her untimely passing. God bless you all in these tragic times."

Lagan Valley DUP MP Jeffrey Donaldson extended his condolences to Isobel's family.
