STARS of sport, current affairs and politics are expected to attend the funeral today of broadcasting legend Jimmy Magee.

The RTÉ commentator passed away in hospital in Dublin on Wednesday following a short illness. He was 82.

Magee, who was born in New York, but raised in the Cooley Peninsula, Co Louth, had been ill for some time.

Family and friends are today due to say their farewells to Magee at his funeral Mass in Kilmacud, on the outskirts of Dublin.

The service will take place at the Church of St Laurence O’Toole at 11.30am followed by burial in Shanganagh Cemetery.

Since his death, tributes have been paid to the broadcaster, known as the Memory Man, whose career spanned more than half a century, much of that time spent with RTÉ, whom he joined in 1956.

As one of the world's longest-serving sports broadcasters, he was behind the microphone for many of the greatest days in Irish and international sport, working at 11 Olympic Games and 12 World Cups.

He also provided commentary on more than 200 soccer internationals and many Tour de France races featuring Irish stars as well as working on UTV, where he fulfilled a life-long ambition to commentate on All-Ireland finals.

He is survived by his children Linda, Mark, June and Patricia.
