The European Parliament's Brexit negotiator Guy Verhofstadt visited republican and loyalist murals and memorials in Belfast today as part of his fact-finding mission.

Ahead of meeting Stormont's main parties, the former prime minister of Belgium toured the Clonard area of west Belfast and the loyalist Lower Newtownards Road in the morning.

The MEP and leader of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe Group tweeted pictures of himself beside the Clonard Martyrs Memorial Garden on Bombay Street and the 'Freedom Corner' UFF mural in east Belfast.

"It is important to understand our history in order to find solutions for our future together," he tweeted alongside the pictures.
