A flat in Derry’s Bogside where toddler, Kayden McLaughlin was found dead remained sealed off last night pending the outcome of a post mortem exam.

Police have confirmed they are investigating the three-year-old’s death after they were called to the scene at Colmcille Court on Sunday morning.

A PSNI spokesman said: “Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the sudden death of a young child in the Bogside area.”

Northern Ireland Housing Executive staff boarded up the upstairs flat where the toddler lived yesterday, after police completed their initial investigations. It is understood a post mortem exam is to be held later today to ascertain the cause of death.

Local people left floral tributes outside the family home while a set of Rosary Beads and a religious picture was hung from the front door of the flat yesterday.

Kayden had been living at the apartment with his mum, Erin McLaughlin and new baby sister, Skyler. Neighbours said there were traumatic scenes outside the family home on Sunday morning as family and relatives realised the three-year-old had died. It is believed the youngster was found dead in bed shortly before 10am on Sunday.

Derry independent councillor, Sean Carr who lives close to the area said everyone was stunned.

“It’s everyone’s worst nightmare and my sympathies must go out to the family,” Mr Carr said.

Mr Carr said the fact that the toddler was just three years old made the tragedy all the move shocking.

“I know a post mortem has to be done in these circumstances but I would hope that can be done as quickly as possible so that his family can grieve fully,” the Derry councillor said.
