SEVERAL homes were evacuated after a suspicious object was discovered in Newtownabbey.
The alert in the Mayfield Village area of the Co Antrim town began around midday yesterday.
Army bomb disposal experts were sent to the scene and the object was removed for further examination late yesterday afternoon.
SDLP Glengormley councillor Noreen McClelland said the alert caused "significant disruption" for people living in the area.
"The last thing anyone here needs is to be forced from their home in the middle of the day," she said.
Police appealed for information.
