An investigation is under way to establish how a major fire was started at a disused mill close to the Crumlin Road in north Belfast.

At least six appliances were called to the scene of the blaze at the top floor of Ewarts Mill shortly after 5pm yesterday (MON).

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus had gone into the building to tackle the fire while am aerial crew damped down the outside of the building to stop the flames from spreading.

Fire crews from across Belfast were called to the fire over fears it might spread to nearby residential properties.

A member of the public raised the alarm after flames were seen coming from the upstairs windows of the old mill.

Assistant Group Commander Martin Thompson who lead the operation said his crews checked all other floors of the building and were satisfied that there was no one on the premises at the time.

An investigation will now take place to establish the cause of the fire.

The old linen mill once owned by William Ewart was also used to manufacture munitions during World War Two, but has lain empty since the late 1960s.
