POLICE have said 'nothing untoward' was discovered following shock reports that a human head may have been found on waste ground in west Belfast.

Extensive searches were carried out in the Ballygomartin area amid suggestions that remains may been uncovered.

It is understood the operation was launched after children who had been playing there at the weekend said they had seen a bag containing what appeared to be a head.

Local community worker Isaac Andrews commented on Twitter that the community was "in complete shock" and the unfolding events were "extraordinary".

Police search teams spent most of yesterday combing undergrowth at the top of Springmartin Road before the bizarre sequence of events came to an end.

Detective Inspector Paul Rowland said: "The search has now concluded and nothing has been found.

"While nothing untoward has been found on this occasion, I would like to encourage members of the public to continue reporting anything they feel is suspicious to police."
