THE annual Foyle Pride march in Derry today will retrace the route of the original October 5 1968 civil rights march through the city.

Large numbers are expected to join the Foyle Pride parade which starts from Waterside railway station at 2pm before making its way to Guildhall Square.

Organisers said the parade, which is now in its 24th year, will retrace the steps of the 1968 march which many consider a landmark event in the north’s recent history.

A spokesperson for Foyle Pride said the aim of the annual festival and parade was to acknowledge, empower and celebrate the LGBT community.

“Our ethos is to continue and maximise our presence the best that we can so that we, and you, will help continue supporting equality and the rights of those who identify as LGBT.”

Police have advised that there will be some disruption to traffic during today’s parade.

A spokeswoman said: “The parade will assembly at the railway station on Duke Street at 1pm. It will then make its way towards the Craigavon Bridge. The parade will follow a route along Carlisle Road, Ferryquay Street towards The Diamond.

“It will then move down Shipquay Street towards Guildhall Square. There is no return parade.”
