THE first of two funerals was held yesterday for young men from Co Fermanagh who tragically died following a car crash last weekend.

Friends Luke Lynch (22) and Ronan Melarkey (21) died as a result of the one-vehicle crash on Sunday evening on Clones Road, Newtownbutler.

Mr Lynch was driving the Peugeot 206 and died at the scene, while passenger Mr Melarkey died some days later in hospital.

A third man in the vehicle, also aged in his 20s, sustained non-life threatening injuries in the accident.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the collision and have urged anyone with information to contact them.

Family and friends gathered yesterday morning at St Mary's Church in Newtownbutler for Mr Lynch's funeral. He was buried afterwards in the cemetery beside the church.

Mr Melarkey's funeral Mass will be held today at 2pm in the same church, with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

Tributes have fondly described the pair as "humble, thoughtful and understanding", "two absolute gentlemen", and "two young talented men with their future ahead of them".

Mr Lynch played for Newtownbutler First Fermanaghs GAA club. Their players and members formed a guard of honour at his funeral.

A candlelit vigil is set to be held in the village tomorrow evening in memory of the two young men.
