Police in Birmingham have begun a murder investigation following the death of an Irishman in the city

Phillip Leonard, originally from Co Louth, was found with serious head injuries in Birmingham city centre in the early hours of Friday, July 28.

The 34-year-old died in hospital on Monday.

A post-mortem examination found he died as a result of head injuries consistent with an attack.

Police have arrested and charged a 26-year-old man, with wounding, in connection with the incident.

The suspect, also from Ireland, has been remanded in custody.

West Midlands Police has appealed to anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward with information.
