TWO members of staff suspended at Belfast City Hospital following a C. Difficile outbreak are understood to be senior nursing staff, according to reports.

The outbreak is believed to have happened in a ward for older people in May, the BBC reported.

C. diff is a bacterium that can infect the bowel and cause extreme diarrhoea in some patients.

A spokeswoman for the Belfast Trust has said it is carrying out an investigation.

"The Trust is conducting an internal investigation into the issue but has sought an independent expert to chair this process," she said.

"The Trust can confirm that two members of staff have been temporarily suspended in relation to this matter."

In July, a ward at the Musgrave Park Hospital in Belfast was closed following a C. diff outbreak. Two patients were affected.
