WORK to demolish a west Belfast leisure centre and replace it with a new multi purpose facility will begin next month after the plans were approved.

The site of Andersonstown Leisure Centre on Andersonstown Road will become "the largest family friendly leisure centre in Northern Ireland" following a £25 million development.

The investment is part of Belfast city council's £105m, 10-year programme to improve leisure facilities, programmes and services across the city.

The facility, which is due to open in Summer 2019, will have an emphasis on water based family fun. The poolside area will feature a wide range of facilities, including slides and wet play equipment suitable for younger children. There will also be a FlowRider surf machine and slides suitable for the more adventurous.

The centre will also house a 25-metre six-lane pool with 50 spectator seats, a learner pool, confidence water for small children and toddlers, a 140 station fitness suite, exercise studios, a spin studio, cafe, multipurpose room and a range of outdoor provision such as five-a-side pitches.

Councillor Donal Lyons, chairman of Belfast City Council's Planning Committee, said: "These exciting plans for Andersonstown Leisure Centre will create the largest family friendly leisure centre in Northern Ireland.

"As our Belfast Agenda sets out, we want everyone in Belfast to experience good health and wellbeing, and this substantial investment in our Leisure Transformation Programme is allowing us to take great strides towards achieving that goal."
