A POIGNANT mural dedicated to Derry City football captain Ryan McBride who died suddenly in March has been unveiled in his native Brandywell.

The 27-year-old’s sudden death sent shock waves through the footballing world in Ireland and further afield.

Described as a “warrior” Ryan was the engine of the Candystripes and a firm favourite among the club’s support. Living within the shadow of the Brandywell stadium, his ambition was always to play for his home-town club.

Now a mural in his honour has been created and unveiled at Long Tower Youth Club as part of the Gasyard Féile. The mural was unveiled during “A Day for Ryan McBride” which included a host of footballing activities in the area.

The Derry man’s former teammates were joined by Derry City manager Kenny Shiels for the activities they played street football with local young people.

A spokesperson for the McBride family, who attended the event, said the footballer was still sorely missed but would be remembered through the work of the newly-established Ryan McBride Foundation, which was set up in the wake of the former skipper's death to help young people achieve their goals.
