LIFEBOAT crews are continuing their search for a Canadian diver who has gone missing off Co Donegal’s north coast.

The diver was reported missing on Saturday afternoon while diving off Fanad Head.

Today's search focused on a wide area approximately 14 miles off Malin Head.

The sea off Fanad and Malin Head is popular with divers from all over the world because of the high number of ship wrecks in the area.

U-boats often lay in wait off Malin Head for Second World War shipping convoys which travelled from the US to Britain and which had to pass close to Donegal to reach their destinations.

Following the end of the war, Germany’s North Atlantic U-boat fleet surrendered in Derry with many of the vessels then being sunk off Malin Head.

It is understood the missing diver was part of a group which left Downings Pier on a charter vessel on Saturday morning to dive on the wreck of the Pinto.

The MV Pinto was a British armed cargo ship which was sunk by a German U boat in September 1944 with the loss of 23 of its 60-strong crew.

The Canadian diver was working at a depth of 65 metres when he went missing.

The search is being co-ordinated by Malin Head Coastguard.

Lough Swilly Lifeboat has been joined by Portrush Lifeboat as well as the Irish Coastguard’s Rescue Helicopter and a number of local vessels.
