TWO of the most controversial documentaries made during the Troubles are set to be screened as part of Cinema Day which takes place at venues across Northern Ireland later this month.

Death on the Rock and At the Edge of the Union both made headlines when they were broadcast in the 1980s.

Death on the Rock investigated the shooting dead of three IRA members in Gibraltar in 1988 and was broadcast by Thames Television's This Week current affairs series.

It was later to become the first documentary to be the subject of an independent inquiry.

It went on to win a BAFTA award for Best Documentary.

At the Edge of the Union featured in the BBC’s Real Lives series focused on the lives of former Sinn Féin Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness and DUP MP Gregory Campbell.

Staff at the BBC went on strike after attempts by Margaret Thatcher’s Tory government to stop the BBC from broadcasting the programme.

Both programmes will be shown at 7.30pm at the Black Box in Belfast on August 28.

Classic movies including the Jungle Book, The Wizzard of Oz and Fight Club will also be broadcast as part of the event, which is billed as a “celebration of the silver screen”.
