A 18-YEAR-OLD man "almost lost his leg" in a hit-and-run crash in Co Antrim, his mother has said.

Lewis McCammond was walking on Longshot in Doagh between 2am and 2.45am on Saturday when he was hit by a vehicle which failed to stop at the scene.

His mother Sarah Milden-Hall said her son's leg was "shattered". He has already undergone three operations and faces more surgery, she said.

She told the BBC he sustained "life-changing injuries" and now faces a year-long recovery.

Ms Milden-Hall thanked two young men and a woman who stopped their car and called for an ambulance. She believed their intervention saved his life.

Police are investigating the hit-and-run and have appealed for information.

"We are appealing to the driver of the vehicle that failed to stop to come forward," a spokesman said.

"We would also like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or who has any information about it to get in touch with police."
