A PENSIONER has been threatened with a hammer during an assault in west Belfast.

The 71-year-old man received a minor head injury in the attack in the Kells Avenue area of Suffolk at around 8.25am on Saturday morning.

Police said that the pensioner was one of three men who were walking along the street when a car pulled up alongside them.

Two men got out of the car and assaulted two of the group, stealing a wallet from one of them.

One of the attackers produced a hammer and threatened the victims, causing the 71-year-old man to suffer a bump to his head.

The assailants then made off in a southern-registered red Volkswagen Golf.

Police said they are also investigating a link between the attack in Kells Avenue and damage caused to a car in nearby Oranmore Drive.

Two men in a red coloured car smashed the windscreen and passenger window of a Toyota car which was parked on the street.

Police have appealed for information.
