A CO Down-born breast surgeon who intentionally wounded patients has had his 15 year jail term increased to 20 years.

Ian Paterson (59) appeared at the Court of Appeal via video link yesterday to be told his current sentence was "not sufficient" to reflect the seriousness and the totality of his offending.

He had been found guilty in May at Nottingham Crown Court of 17 counts of wounding with intent and three further wounding charges.

Lady Justice Hazel Hallett, one of the three Appeal Court judges, said his victims had been "left feeling violated and vulnerable" by his "brutal and sustained" treatment.

The former breast cancer specialist, who grew up in Bangor, Co Down and was a former Bangor Grammar pupil, was described by his lawyer as being a "marked man" in prison who has to be kept apart from other inmates due to his "truly notorious" crimes.

The increase in sentence was welcomed by his victims who attended the sitting.
