Man accused of harassing a priest accepts caution as charges against him are withdrawn

A MAN accused of harassing a priest has had charges against him withdrawn after he accepted a caution.

The development regarding Kevin Stewart, from Woodend Park, Articlave, was revealed at Coleraine Magistrate's Court today.

The 38-year-old was charged with harassment of Fr Brendan Mulhall, between March 31, 2015 and February 2, 2016.

He was also accused of causing criminal damage to the interior walls of The Gate Lodge at St Malachy’s Church in Coleraine between February 22, 2015 and February 2, 2016.

A third charge was that he stole three kitchen cupboard doors belonging to St Malachy’s Church sometime on the same dates.

Stewart had previously denied the offences before accepting the caution.

Defence barrister Alan Stewart said his client had been residing in the property and said at one stage Bishop Pat Buckley was due to have been a witness for the defence.

No other details were given to the court.
