TWO men have appeared in court charged in connection with a serious assault in Co Down.

Michael Loughlin (20) from Iveagh Close in Banbridge was charged with attempted murder, assaulting police, theft and causing criminal damage.

Shay Leonard (22) from Willow Avenue, also in Banbridge, was charged with grievous bodily harm with intent and theft.

The charges relate to an attack on a man in his 40s, who suffered serious head injuries following an assault at Scarva Walk in the town on Friday.

The court in Newry yesterday heard that the victim was left in a critical condition after the attack.

Both men were remanded in custody and are due to appear in court again on August 17.
