More than one week on from a serious sexual assault in south Belfast, no arrests have been made and police have said there is no updated appeal regarding the incident.

A 32-year-old woman was raped at St George’s Gardens, off Sandy Row, shortly after midnight on the Twelfth.

It is believed a man tried to pull the victim behind parked cars before dragging her into bushes where he subjected her to a serious sexual assault lasting more than 20 minutes.

The rapist fled on foot after being confronted by people who had heard a disturbance.

The Irish News later reported that the rape had taken place near a loyalist Eleventh Night bonfire and hundreds of people had been present in the area at the time.

The PSNI later appealed for information about the assault however came under pressure for not revealing that the attack had happened near the scene of an Eleventh Night bonfire.

Green Party assembly member, Clare Bailey called on police to "do as much as they can in enabling assistance from the public".

She added: "If this means clearly stating that the sexual assault took place at or around the bonfire they shouldn’t be sheepish in doing that.”

However, when asked this week by the Irish News about whether they would be updating an appeal about the incident, with further details about the location of the rape, the PSNI said it had no updated appeal.
