A LOYALIST bonfire is being built in a privately-run car park near Shaftesbury Square in south Belfast.

Stacks of pallets have been placed in the HandyPark facility on Posnett Street, between Donegall Pass and Botanic Avenue.

At the entrance to the car park a hand-painted sign reads, "dump wood".

Bonfires have been constructed on the site for many years, but the issue of such pyres has been highlighted after bonfire builders closed off a public car park in east Belfast.

The site at Bloomfield Walkway, off the Upper Newtownards Road, has been at the centre of controversy over the city council storing pallets for loyalists.

The firm Car Park Services, which runs the facility on Posnett Street, yesterday did not respond to requests for a comment.
