FINAL preparations are underway in Portstewart as the Irish Open gets set to welcome more than 20,000 visitors a day in a week-long festival of golf.

Next week's tournament will see some of the world's top golfers - including Holywood's Rory McIlroy - take to the fairways of Portstewart Golf Club.

An estimated 100,000 spectators are expected to attend the event in Co Derry, which is set to be the biggest in the tournament's history with an increased prize fund of more than £5 million.

Work is still continuing at the golf club as a steady team of workers from the European Tour create grandstands, marquees, a players' lounge and merchandising sites. There's a kids park, car displays and many refreshment stands also being created at the site.

Workers have been on site for weeks preparing for the beginning of the golf competition, which will also see the town buzzing with activity.

Businesses in Porstewart have been organising special golf-themed promotions and events for the week of sport, including a music festival which will coincide with the world class golf competition.

More than 30 of Northern Ireland's finest musicians will be performing live in coffee shops, hotels, restaurants and bars around the Co Derry town as part of the Midsummer Sessions.

Some of the world's biggest names in golf will be arriving in the coming days with the aim of dethroning four-time Major champion McIlroy and joining the esteemed list of Irish Open champions.

Practice rounds are due to get underway on Tuesday with the Pro-Am due on Wednesday with a host of celebrities taking part ahead of the main event.

Competition days will take place from Thursday July 6 to 9, with the tournament set to be broadcast across the globe, reaching more than 450 million households worldwide.

Eimear Callaghan from Tourism NI said the "buzz is now really intensifying" as the start of the Irish Open draws closer.

"It is no small feat to stage one of golf’s largest events, while broadcasting every second to homes around the world," she said.
