A LEADING GAA figure in the US who is facing deportation was wanted by authorities over allegations he failed to carry out work he was paid for.

Donegal man John Cunningham was detained by immigration officials in the Boston area last week.

It has now emerged that a warrant for his arrest was issued in 2014 after he was accused of failing to carry out electrical work and banking $1,300 paid to him by cheque beforehand.

It is reported that he failed to appear in court in 2014 and a warrant was then issued.

A former chairman of the Boston Northeast GAA, Mr Cunningham has a high profile in Irish-American circles.

It believed he first arrived in America in 1999 and has not returned to Ireland in 16 years.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials confirmed that the 38-year-old was detained for overstaying his tourist visa.

ICE official Shawn Neudauer told Irish Central that Mr Cunningham is still in custody and would be sent back to Ireland following a "relatively quick" process.
