Man arrested following north Belfast armed robbery

MEMBERS of the public have had to intervene during an armed robbery at a shop in Belfast.

The incident happened at around 10.45pm on Sunday when two men, one of whom was armed with a knife, entered at a shop on the Ardoyne Road.

An employee was threatened before the pair stole a quantity of cigarettes. Members of the public then intervened and the two suspects fled the scene.

One of the suspects was apprehended by police a short distance away and was arrested on suspicion of armed robbery.

A quantity of the stolen cigarettes were recovered and the 22-year-old suspect remains in police custody.

Detective Sam McCallum said: "We are appealing for witnesses to this crime to get in touch with police. Please call 101 quoting reference number 1538 18/06/17."
