A VULNERABLE 15-year-old boy cried out for his mother as he was attacked with iron bars by a masked gang in Derry, police have said.

The PSNI has appealed for witnesses to come forward and urged people to turn their backs on anyone involved in such “barbarity”.

The teenager was targeted in what was described as a paramilitary-style attack at Garten Square in the Bogside.

The teenager, described as vulnerable by police, suffered a number of broken bones in the attack just after midnight on Saturday night.

PSNI chief inspector Ivor Morton condemned the attack.

“The attack, carried out by a number of masked assailants armed with iron bars, was a terrifying ordeal for the vulnerable 15-year-old boy who was heard to have cried out for his 'mammy' while the attack was taking place.”

Chief Inspector Morton said that while the victim was recovering from his physical injuries, he hoped he would also recover from the psychological impact of the attack.

“There can be no place in our society for this type of barbarity. All right minded people must turn their backs on those responsible for such incidents and do the right thing by giving police any information they have about their activities,” he said.
