THE funeral of Disappeared victim Seamus Ruddy is due to take place in Newry next week.

The 32-year-old teacher's remains were repatriated home from France earlier this week and taken to the Dublin City Mortuary. They are expected to be brought to his sister Anne Morgan's home in Newry on June 15.

Requiem Mass is due to be held at St Catherine's Dominican Chapel, Dominic Street, Newry on June 17 followed by burial in Monk's Hill cemetery.

Mr Ruddy was abducted in Paris and murdered and secretly buried by the INLA in 1985. His remains were found a month ago in a forest at Pont-de-l'Arche near Rouen in northern France by the Independent Commission for the Location of Victims' Remains (ICLVR).

Following the discovery, Ms Morgan, who campaigned tirelessly for her brother's remains to be found, said her family were relieved he would finally be laid to rest beside his parents.

"We never gave up hope despite some very dark times and now our prayers have been answered," she said.

"It would not have happened if people who had information about where Seamus was buried had not come forward to the ICLVR and we thank them for that."

The ICLVR was set up during the peace process by the British and Irish governments to recover the bodies of those murdered and secretly buried, mainly by the IRA, in the 1970s and 1980s.

The recovery of Mr Ruddy's remains leaves three of the 16 Disappeared victims still missing. Columba McVeigh, Joe Lynskey and Robert Nairac have yet to be found.
