A 25-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested on suspicion of the attempted theft of diesel from a farm in Co Down.

The man was detained at a farm in the Tulllynagardy Road area of Newtownards at around 1.40pm on Saturday.

It followed a report to police that two men in a black Volkswagen Transporter van had entered a farmyard and were stealing diesel.

Police have said they are seeking to locate the second man who left the area before officers arrived.

Inspector Johnny Francey said: "Officers quickly attended and arrested a man aged 25 on suspicion of attempted theft. He was taken into custody where he is assisting us with our enquiries.

"The van the men were using has been seized by police and an air rifle, which we believe was discarded by the second suspect, was located nearby."

Police have appealed to anyone with information to contact officers on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
