A PSNI helicopter was called out during a high-speed police chase involving a speeding vehicle reaching speeds of 100 miles per hour.

Police responded to reports of cars being driven dangerously near Marrowbone Millennium Park on the Oldpark Road in north Belfast late on Wednesday night.

One car was abandoned and set alight, while another fled the scene.

The police gave chase and the helicopter was called in when speeds reached in excess of 100 mph.

The car, a Volkswagon Golf, sped off through Newtownabbey, Doagh, Ballymena, Broughshane and Carnlough.

The pursuit ended when the vehicle crashed on the Munie Road, between Glenarm and Ballymena after 1am.

PSNI Inspector Paul Noble said: “The occupants of the car exited the vehicle and made off upon the arrival of police at the scene of the crash.

"The car has now been recovered and will be forensically examined."

A spokesman for Belfast City Council said damage to the fence at Marrowbone Park caused during the incident had been repaired.
