TWO 'Belfast Bikes' have been dumped on the Shankill Road after being vandalised.

It is understood the bikes, available under a public hire scheme, were left abandoned on the footpath close to KFC on Monday afternoon.

Alternative Restorative Justice, a community restorative justice programme in loyalist areas, posted photos of the bikes on Facebook and said it was "disgusted".

It wrote: "Brought them to bike dock at (Shankill) Leisure centre but they had been vandalised and couldn't be locked up. Had to ring council to have them picked up.

"Unfortunately this scheme is in jeopardy due to mindless vandalism across Belfast. This costs us the taxpayers hundreds of thousands of pounds and the scheme was brought to the Shankill through lobbying.

"Don't let this happen if you see any incidents of vandalism please report to Belfast City Council or PSNI."

It comes weeks after Belfast City Council confirmed that more than a third of Belfast Bikes have been stolen or vandalised, warning that attacks were putting the future of the scheme in jeopardy.

More than 400,000 journeys have been made with the bikes since the scheme was set up two years ago, but vandalism is costing the scheme almost £1,800 a month.

Photos have emerged showing several bikes which had been dumped in the River Lagan, while in one case, a bike was sawn in half.

A spokesman for Belfast City Council said: "We are aware of the bikes in question. They have been repaired and are back in service."
